FIRST SUMMER SCHOOL IN 2013
I have had a lot of orthodontic trainings in Europe and USA before. I took lectures of the most famous orthodontists all around the world...by the way I'm working as an orthodontist and as a teacher at the Russian Medical University and in my own orthodontic practice for 14 years. That's why I can strongly recommend this course developed by two orthodontic geeks- Giorgio and Birte.
This course is not market-oriented!!! You will not listen about the best prescription and the smart wires!!! You will not get a cookbook on how to fix class I, II or III!!!
But You WILL KNOW HOW to move any tooth or group of teeth in 3D to desirable positions without side effects in the shortest time possible. More over you can get a lot of useful tools and hints how to plan your treatment.
This course is a good chance to increase your possibilities in orthodontics and to meet with two masters of orthodontic biomechanics...

I really liked the Biomechanics Summer School!
This course and the book really complement each other. Your lectures and explanations are very complete and easy to understand. I use in my work a lot of advices I had from your lectures. Now I look forward to the results.

Personally I found the Course a little too much on theory, less hands on. However the Course has been useful to me, I understand better the importance of anchorage control and other biomechanical principles.
I expected a more practical, more on the typodont, learn how, see it done and do type of Course. It was not a Course for beginners and for them particularly I recommend to study carefully the textbook before the course starts. I was very happy to learn from Dr. Fiorelli and Dr. Melsen, I found both of them very approachable and kind, I loved Dr. Verna's way of giving a Seminar, in my opinion she was perfect.

Comment by Giorgio Fiorelli: At the end of our first course many participants asked for more time with practical activities, however nobody thought that the theoretical lectures were excessive. For this reason we brought the course from 4 to 5 weeks and from now on we will have more practical activities.
At the Orthodontic Biomechanics Summer School you learn everything you need to perform any tooth movement you might desire. This course can be highly recommended if you want your treatment to be predictable and not rely on or worry about the side effects of so called "intelligent wires". Hands-on sessions with typodonts and the use of computerized occlusograms make it a great experience also from a practical point of view. If you really want to understand biomechanics, this is the place to go!

I knew my first week after the course will be tough. Because all my complicated and hard cases were scheduled as soon as I get back after more than five week absence. But it was even more hard. Even these cases where it used to be just the simple change of the wire, were not so simple anymore. All the possible side effects, unwanted movements and etc. were crossing my eye, and brain . And I knew that in my head there is a knowledge to control that, but I need more time to find that info in my head, process it, and get a solution. And I need a TPA. So my last weeks summary: bunch of separation elastics, one truncated V bend, several cantilevers, a lot of rescheduled patients for longer appointments, photos to use a DMA and a lot of homework. As my fellow endodotist said, "you can never go back to ordinary root canal treatment, after learning to do it with a microscope" and this is how I feel now. Like having a microscope, just not used to use it. It will take more time at first, but I know that in a long run that's the way to do it.

Through this post I would like to express my satisfaction of being part of this group. The Orthodontic summer course was outstanding, and was beyond my expectations.
Each day was exciting and full of new concepts. If you are not an English native speaker (like me) you don't need to be afraid, because Giorgio's english is very easy to comprehend. Birte has an accent that can be a little defying at the very beginning, but she is very willing to repeat as often as needed. In a couple of days you get used to that.
All the knowledge obtained changed the way I work in all phases of treatment (from diagnosis to finishing).
As soon as I arrived in my office, the first thing I did was to cut the continuous wires into segments and changed some niti and SS wire to TMA segments with loops, and there are HUGE reasons to do so.
Now I have much more predictable movements and my treatments are much faster, not because I use expensive or miraculous wires or brackets, but because the knowledge I have now allows me to go straight to the treatment objectives

This course was as a quantum leap for me in my daily practice , I feel now that I am on the right way , and I know that this is just the beginning , and I must develop my knowledge through the study of this amazing book , I want to thank you Giorgio for your interest for us even after the end of the course, because you are our only reference to learn more and more about this Science .

Thanks so much Giorgio and Birte, this course is defenetively going to change the way I look at ll the complex cases, both from an orthodontic and prosthodontic perspective for the rest of my career. The course included excellent teaching on biomechanics principles, a systematic way to look at a case and understand the major movements necessary to reach set goals. It gives the possibility of understanding the very difficult movements, how to recognize them and how to design the force system to treat them.
Just a thought after a long 5 weeks.
There is a famous saying as follows: "When The Student is Ready The Teacher Appears"
Whether we were ready or not, we have found true teachers of biomechanics that have forever changed the way we will look at our patients.
I have taken many amazing courses in 22 years of dentistry and been in the presence of many amazing educators but count only a few as True Teachers and Mentors and Friends. Dr Fiorelli and Dr. Melsen are added to this short list!!
As well, as the old guy in the class, I remind you all that as life goes by, you realize that happiness is not about the "$$/cha-ching/ba-bling" but truly about family and friends and the experiences we have that will last forever in our memories.
This has been one of those experiences for me. I feel that I have many great new friends for life from this amazing time in Italy.
I will miss you all until we meet again.
